Where to find your treasure

On a beautiful Saturday morning, I joined several friends who were setting up a traditional
Easter egg hunt for children of varying ages. The hunt was at my friend Sarah’s home—a sprawling 20 acres where she and her husband Keith keep big dogs and even bigger horses.

Listening to Sarah admonish the littlest hunters before they set off to find their eggs, I realized her advice to them could also apply to my own recent searches for life’s goodies. Maybe you’ll find it useful as well:

Roll with the punches like Ali

The third time I was diagnosed with cancer, it had spread beyond its initial boundaries and the early prognosis looked grim. The only thing I could manage to say was “I cannot do this again. I cannot do this again.” “Yes, you can,” answered all the encouraging, well-meaning people around me. “You just have to roll with it.”

 

They were right, of course. But when you take a hit like that, somewhere in the back of your brain, you can’t help thinking, “Yeah? How ’bout I whack you over the head and see how you roll with it?”

In the musical Oklahoma! the character Ado Annie laments how she’s “just a girl who cain’t say no.” Of course, Ado Annie only has that problem with “fellers” who get flirty and talk “purty.” She may be a little scandalous for her time, but you get the feeling Ado Annie doesn’t really regret being one to “never make a complaint ’til it’s too late for restraint.”

Too bad that can’t be said of the rest of us.
