Unpredictable moods create chaos

When Mr. Utterson thought of his old friend Harry Jekyll, he pictured a smooth, jovial face that radiated kindness. But when he looked into the pale face and displeasing smile of the mysterious Edward Hyde, he saw “a sort of murderous mixture of timidity and boldness.” As he warned Jekyll, “if ever I read Satan’s signature on a face, it is on that of your new friend.”

But as anyone who’s read Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic novella or seen one of the many film adaptations knows, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde were one in the same.

We may never have kept company with physicians who experimented on themselves with strange potions, but we’ve probably all known at least one person who seemed to have dramatically different personalities depending on the cycle of the moon or which way the wind was blowing. And with all the stresses we’re under these days, it’s just possible we sometimes give off a little Jekyll-and-Hyde vibe ourselves.

How to survive a rotten day

July 18, 1984. People walking along the street that Wednesday in Detroit were probably a little startled when it suddenly began raining … clothes … books … small kitchen appliances … furniture … a bicycle … a stove … a refrigerator.

For three hours, unemployed auto worker Nelson Jones dumped the contents of his 16th-floor apartment onto the street as crowds watched and a television crew captured the drama for the evening news. When it ended, police charged Jones with littering. As his niece later noted, “Everyone has their off days.”

Peanuts: Aaugh!

Launching a Web site has been an adventure. It’s also been a reaffirmation of Murphy’s Law. When my site designer was available, I was sick. When I finally felt up to par, his wife needed surgery. When all the humans recovered, my laptop casing inexplicably cracked and even duct tape couldn’t save it. Before finding the Logo Co., the terrific firm that created my logo, I wasted nearly a month working with designers who never met a piece of clip art they didn’t like. And now that we’re finally up and running, we’re trying to work our way through the daily glitches that seem to pop up with the launch of any enterprise.
