Stare down your weight problems
People often make weight loss more difficult than it has to be. All you have to do is take in fewer calories than you burn. Uh-huh … easier said than done.
If you’re finding it difficult to get control over your food consumption, maybe all you really need is to learn how to show the food who’s boss. Just take the same approach as when your kids are misbehaving, your coworkers are getting on your nerves, your dog is chewing your slippers, and the customer-service rep is trying to deny your refund: Give that food an icy stare.
How apples keep docs away
Mention apples to me and for some bizarre reason I picture the evil queen from Disney’s version of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. She’s disguised as an old woman tempting Snow White with a poisoned apple. Maybe she comes to mind because I’ve never been crazy about apples. Apple pie, apple tart, apple cake, apple rings? Yes. Ordinary apples that haven’t been laced with piles of sugar? Not so much.
But I’m having a change of heart.
One of my biggest struggles is taking good care of my body and keeping it in optimal working condition. Despite the best intentions, I often fail when it comes to choosing the most nutritious fuel. As a friend once told me, I’m proof that it is possible to survive without eating fruits and vegetables. To survive, yes. But to thrive? Not really. Supplementation doesn’t take the place of enjoying nature’s bounty. And I recently learned that few natural foods have as much to offer as apples.
Eat slowly to lose weight
This holiday season like every other, I will walk into my sister-in-law’s kitchen. I will see the enemy. And the enemy will be mine.
Unfortunately, the enemy is a cookie—and it has friends.
Every year, my sister-in-law goes to a small local bakery and buys Christmas cookies I seem to find irresistible. Why oh why can’t she just buy Oreos? I can resist Oreos. But just because I indulge in some of these lovely bakery treats doesn’t mean they have to immediately attach themselves to my buttocks.
7 nutrients to improve your health
What do you have in common with a puppy who’s being housebroken? If you’re trying to lose weight or get healthy, it’s the vocabulary. The only words you hear are: No! Don’t! Bad!
No! processed white-flour and white-sugar products!
Don’t! drink sugary sodas or eat too much red meat!
Transfats are Bad!
If you read every diet book on the market, you’d probably conclude that, like a teething puppy, you’d be happiest—and maybe healthiest—if you just chewed on your slippers.

If you’re looking for encouragement for your weight-loss efforts, you don’t necessarily have to opt for a top-of-the-line support system. According to research published in the Canadian Medical Association Journal, a low-budget program will work just as well.
Researchers from the Edgar National Center for Diabetes Research in Dunedin, New Zealand, divided 200 women who had lost at least 5 percent of their body weight into two support groups. The “intensive” group went to 11 individualized 35-minute meetings with a nutritionist and exercise trainer plus two training sessions at a private gym. The other group weighed in with a nurse every two weeks and spent five to 10 minutes talking with her about their diet and physical activity. The nurse would also periodically check in with participants by phone between weigh-ins.
