Are you ready to simplify?

Smiling Couple Moving Boxes Out of Empty Apartment

Apparently a lot of Americans have started to figure out that those who die with the most toys don’t win. They just spend their lives lugging around a lot more stuff—and then they have to leave it here for their loved ones to take care of when they finally shuffle off this mortal coil. So … people have started simplifying their lives by getting rid of some of their toys in advance.

A recent study by Mayflower Transit, the St. Louis–based moving-van company notes that the average shipping weight for a household move last year was 6,571 pounds—down 2 percent from 2007. And despite the giant “McMansions” that seem to have popped up all over the country, household shipping weights have been steadily decreasing for four consecutive years. In fact, they’re down 10 percent from a decade ago when Mayflower first began collecting the stats.

A Mayflower spokesperson suggests that Americans are changing their lifestyles to reflect not only the current economic conditions, but also a desire to support sustainability and green trends. Or perhaps they’re just tired of all the clutter and hoping for a simpler life.
